End of California Trail - Sutter's Fort, The Dream and the Reality
I've known the name of the end of California Trail, Sutter's Fort because
some books showed it to me. However, I couldn't find out its place until
coming to Sacramento, the
capital of California. So, when I arrived there, at first I decided to go there (Sutter's Fort State Historic Park) not only some museums already closed but also I liked "end" first.
Although I thought that the fort was established after "Gold Rush," in fact it had been already constructed there in 1839. The exhibits there told me that although
Sutter built the fort for other objectives it actually served as a temporary
refuge for the pioneers who came to California for new lands until "Gold
Rush." In addition he welcomed them there. That is, this fort became
the end of the California Trail for pioneers. Moreover, he contracted W.
Marshall to build a sawmill some miles east of the fort for his business. In that place, Marshall accidentally discovered
"Gold." The discovery of "Gold" not only took out of
his business opportunity but also ruined the fort because a tremendous
number of rushers for "Gold" made the fort under no control of
him. So, he had to leave there. After all, although he could not fulfill his own dream, he contributed to not only many pioneers but also the prosperity of California.
It is a very sad story, I think. There, I could find other impressive words,
"Sacrifice to El Dorado." Prosperity never exists without many
sacrifices. |
