End of the Lewis & Clark Trail
Although Lewis & Clark had to go back to St. Louis, Pacific Ocean was
factually their ultimate goal. In addition, it was also my last point of
their trails where I had sometimes visited so far. Today I visited the
following three places related to their trails.
The first one was "Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center" in Fort
Candy. Although I have already visited another Interpretive Center in Montana, this center was also interesting.
For one thing, while Montana's one emphasized on their struggle of Great
Falls, it emphasized on their discovery of Pacific Ocean and their life
there. In addition, the view of the month of Columbia River from this interpretive
center was really beautiful.
Next, I headed for Fort Clatsop National Monument. Driving for this Monument
was significant to me because it was in Oregon which is the last state during this trip. Fort Clatsop NM was the
place where the Corp of Discovery spent 1805 winter while preparing for
return journey. Although the fort was replica, it looks as it was. In addition,
since it was observed by National Park Service, some educational events
are sometimes conducted. The most interesting things to me were two films;
One is about entire journey. Another one is about the life of Fort Clatsop.
I was never tired in spite that it took almost one hour.
The last one was Salt Waters where they extract salt for preserving foods
by boiling sea waters. It is wonder why such place is recognized. The reason is they kept record of their journey in detail. Other people except Lewis & Clark also kept records. Near Salt Waters place where the Pacific Ocean spread out I could find the statue of "the end of Lewis and Clark Trail in Oregon." So, I finally come back to the Pacific Ocean. It was not only the goal of my Lewis & Clark Trail but also the beginning of the last chapter of my journey. |
