I have decided to take a rest today although good weather attracts my interest
to downtown Chicago. This morning I was interested in CNN news of "Rush
Hour Traffic." According to CNN, the worst traffic is L.A. and the
followers are San Francisco, Chicago, D.C., and Seattle. I was a little
surprised that the traffic in L.A is the worst because it did not so annoy
me. However, my living place is not in Los Angeles City but in Los Angeles
County. That's why I was not so annoyed. Anyway, by making use of this
precious time I'd like to think about two things related to Illinois.
American Sports
Reading a book of American culture, I knew that Basketball was invented in Illinois. Although I'm not so interested in NBA (in those days I sometimes mistook
NBA for MBA), it convinced me why "Chicago Bulls" is so popular.
By the way, as to sports in the U.S., I've wondered why football is not
so popular in spite of their good performance in World Cup. My guess is
that football (soccer) is from Europe. That is, Americans do not seem to
like traditional sports like football and rugby. How about "MLB,"
"NFL," "NBA," and "NHL."? According to a
book, these sports were invented in the U.S.A except ice hockey. However,
ice hockey was invented not in Europe but in Canada. So, my conclusion
is Americans is not so interested in Europe.
Agriculture
I'm going to "Chicago Board of Trade" tomorrow not only because my major is business but also because I gradually begin to understand why it is located in Chicago and why "Futures" has been so important there through my trip. That is, Chicago is the heart of "Corn Belt" as well as of transportation. These food gains are really source of power of the U.S., I think, because tremendous number of people cannot survive without them. I realized a single farm was much bigger than Japanese one. It is beyond description. Thinking of these facts, only a few people seem to have a power. |
