Invidia (Yugoslavia)

1.Hello Hideki ! Youfre welcomed to Invidia and I hope you will enjoy the following conversation. So, how are you doing, is everything fine with you guys? Band is OK and so onc?

Hello. Yes we are all fine and now just preparing for the European tour that will be dared six weeks in this spring with MAYHEM. Here comes the time to ramble!

2. What can you tell me about gDivinationh? When I heard it for a first time, I knew it wouldnft be disappointment and the next time Ifve listened to it, I didnft stay unpleased either. I want you to tell as much as you can to the readers about music, composition process, introduce us a bit into the songs concept and so forthc I hope you donft mind!

First, we are really proud of everything in this gDivinationh album. Itfs progressed and improved much from the previous albums on every aspect without doubtc songs, lyrics, performances, sound production and so on, we really think. The composing process is quite normal and nothingfs special. Yusuke brings the basis then the rest of us make more substantial. I donft want to tell about the each concept of the songs here because it would limit the imagination of the listeners though most songs are written on the inner, hidden side of humanity, inconsistency or degeneration.

3.Is there any special reason why did you name album like this?

The song titled gDivinationh is one of the climaxes of this album and we thought the tone is suitable for the album title. Itfs a kind of irony here. We DEFILED are not Christians and sick of that kind of religions and the things generally called gDivineh. We just thought itfs cool to name this album so to make it imply some obstinacy.

4.Tell me, how did you hook up with Season Of Mist? How long does this relation ship between them ? Also, are you pleased with how do they work the promotion job and stuff?

We sent the demo for gDivinationh to some labels and Season of Mist gave us the best offer. They promised us their best promotion and actually keep their word so far!

5.Your band works for quite some time now, actually itfs hailing from 1992! Is there anything you could tell me about your history, all your albums and soc? You know, DEFILED may be one of the most UG and respectable death metal bands around the scene, which I truly support, but Serbia is not so much into your career and donft know much about the stuff Ifve mentioned in the first lines. So, would you be so kind to tell me something about it?

Yes, it was 1992 when DEFILED was formed by Yusuke to create original brutal death metal. We have four albums and following you can find the titlesc gDefeat of Sanityh (1994 Bizzare Records), gErupted Wrathh (1999 Nightfall/Terrorizer Records), gUgliness Revealedg (2001 Baphomet/Deathvomit/Necropolis Records), and gDivinationh (2003 Season of Mist Records). Have opened for many bandsf Japan tours like CANNIBAL CORPSE, MORBID ANGEL, VADER, TESTAMENT, ARCH ENEMY etc and toured Europe and the states several timesc Well, check out the gBiographyh section of http://listen.to/defiled for further and minute history please!

6.Thanks. Then, can you tell me how do you write your lyrics, is all your philosophy included there and are you satisfied with the bandfs lyrics etill these days? I read ones from gDivinationh and I must say they sound pretty original and without bullshit, one can very well find something interesting and inspiring. So, please tell me about it, too.

Of course Ifm very much satisfied with the lyrics especially the ones in gDivinationh. Ifm influenced from the brutality of Eastern philosophy and yes as you did, anyone can find some significance or Eastern originality here. Hope everyone check my lyrics out and find something special from them. Well, I think no Western bands can write the lyrics like mine. We Japanese have our own culture, literature, thoughts, philosophies and so on and wefre reflecting them into our music and lyrics. For example a song from gErupted Wrathh album titled gAddicted to Occult Oathh is based on a old Japanese ghost story and it has strong taste of Japan.

7.As well as I could notice, all the members of DEFILED are quite good musicians and without doubt, I can call your music as really one of most complex in the death metal scene today. You come from Japan, so Ifm interested what are the chances there for musicians to develop their acknowledgements? Are there any good music schools, faculties or so and are guys from the band educated on some of the mentioned?

Yes we have many music schools here in Tokyo and actually Norihisa and Yuichi had formal education at that kind of school. They learned many styles there especially Fusion Jazz. Of course therefs no school where we can learn Death Metal though I think itfs good for us to broaden our musical horizons at those schools anyway.

8.Considering that you come from Tokyo and itfs a very very big city, you were somehow influenced by itfs surroundings, eh? I read that on the promo flyer of your new opus, so I want to know if you were really so much influenced by your hometown, how and why?

Many kinds of people live in this city and itfs so simulating. I have friends who came from The States, Europe, China and other Asian countries here and itfs interesting to hear about their thoughts on everything. And, moreover, many curious crimes and crazy incidents happen almost every day and they give me lot hints to write my lyrics. Of course we have many problems on the other hand for example housing shortage and serious traffic jam, they are really disgusting, but at least itfs a fact that we can get similar surroundings in no place but Tokyo.

9.Are you proud to be from Japan? How do you now look to your country and the people? Are they pleasant to talk to? And what about your cultural, native achievements? Do you feel comfortable with it? Ifm also very interested if you have some cool metal places around where some of our sort can gather and similar?

Yes Ifm proud of being Japanese, living in Japan and knowing Japanese culture, literature, philosophies and so on. As I mentioned before, wefre trying to reflect them into our songs more or less. Japan is a small island country and have our own civilization as you know. Especially on the field of Art, we have many talented predecessors. We hope we can succeed to them. I feel uncomfortable when I met some old people who are too conservative but itfs almost same all over the world, I think. You have no need to worry we have metal places as yours and you can find metal heads there easily! We have some cool clubs, Metal shops or Hard Rock Cafes.

10.Letfs come again back to the band. Many fans, journalists and in general people that had chance to hear your songs are more than pleased with how did you succeed in all that and they usual call it original. I must say I totally agree with that fact. How do you see your music and attitude from this point of career?

I agree with the opinion too! We basically avoid getting influenced from any of other bands in this genre intentionally because wefre always trying to be one and only, that is to say original. Of course we love to listen to metal, but love other kind of music simultaneously. And it makes our sound special, I think. For instance, Yusuke loves Classic music of its most avant-garde way so much and you can find the influences from Stravinski or Schenberg on the structure of our songs. Itfs interesting to conduct experiments with dodecaphony or atonality. Our music have no limit and will continue to progress, I promise.

11.Your vocal arrangements doesnft remind me of any singer in death metal genre yet. Do you see it this way too, or maybe you would like to mention some death metal singers that influenced you much, when you were searching for your own style?

I donft wanna categorize myself as a gdeath metal singerh and kindly hope to be called gmetal singerh or grock singerh instead of that. I have many favorite singers in this genre too but almost all of my favorites are from e70s rock singers like Rusty Day from Cactus and Rod Evans from Captain Beyond. I also love Dickinson and Halford so much and actually I once was a high-pitched singer of metal like Tate before joining DEFILED. Anyway, Ifm glad to know you thought my style is something unique, thank you.

12.What is the album thatfs now the most important in the life of your band? What do you think was the one you could say like gWow, man we really did it with this one!h. Donft think Ifm asking you to choose now, all your albums really are fascinating and Ifm sure youfre more than proud of the allc but perhaps, you could name one as the best, in your opinion?

Of course we love all albums but hope everyone to check the new gDivinationh album first. Itfs the fastest and most twisted album wefve ever made and you will never be disappointed, I promise.

13.As I donft know anything about your demos at all I will kindly ask you to widen a picture here, please. Tell me how was the recording process like? Tell me about each of them as much as you can and want to!

We have released two demos in early 90s. I think they were printed several hundred copies only and itfs impossible to get them now. Even I donft have any of them ecouse they were released before I joined the band! Though, all songs in these demos were re-done in gErupted Wrathh album and you can still get the album.

14.When wefre speaking about this, tell me how did you like when you were included on Milwaukee Metalfest, New Jersey Metal Meltdownc? Generally speaking, tell me how did it pass etill now for DEFILED? Any successful and deserved crazy moments, interesting happenings or so?

Of course it was great for us to be a part of these festivals. We could meet many of our friends from all over the world there, and I personally enjoyed to see and play with my stars like SODOM, ANVIL, KING DIAMOND or HADES! We love to play at these Festivals and now very much looking forward to Inferno Festival in Norway, we are going to play at in this April!!

15.OK. Letfs turn a bit to the past, if thatfs not problemc I want you to tell me something when you were total enthusiastic guy, living for death metal and when you tried to find your own band and start playing. Could you imagine something like DEFILED back then? Is it now cool to remember those times and do you feel proud of what you have became and what youfve gained?

If we are not proud of what we are doing and feeling this is not what we really wanted to do, we must have stopped the band already!! This band is what we were aimed and wanted to be one hundred percent!! We all are proud of this band, our music, and the way we have walked and very happy to be in DEFILED.

16.Jim Morris was important figure when it came to mixing of your latest album. Are you satisfied with this guyfs work? I think he did really nice job. I know thousands of well-known or less known bands that were helped by him and he always do the fine work. What about your connections with him?

I think you are totally right. He did great work for the album and we really appreciate it. He is one of the most professional people wefve ever met and we respect him so much. I love other works of him too. From MORBID ANGEL or DEATH to the newest ICED EARTH album, we can find his great skills everywhere.

17.I found some little reminded-of jazz influences in your music, usualy some bass guitar sections and drum arrangements. Maybe itfs not familiar to you too, but mine is opinion youfve mixed it very well. What do you think of this music and did you really plan to use some of these music techniques and bring it to your own magnificent style?

As I told before, our rhythm section learned and is into Jazz Fusion indeed and they bring the elements into our sound. Their favorites are Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Omar Hakim, David Garibaldi and so on, for your information. Ifm also like listening Free Jazz like ART ENSEMBLE OF CHICAGO and may have brought some factor from that genre unconsciously.

18.Many bands that were founded somewhere at the same time when you were, are now too much into this whole shit metal industry, playing for the labels, to gain as much big deals and earn as much money as they can. Whatfs your pose to this facts? Do you consider DEFILED as some sort of underground band, following itfs own ideas and principals and as a band which will never be sold out? I truly hope soc

We have no interest in becoming NSYNC or something! We call ourselves gDEFILEDh, and, names and natures do agree! We love true supporters and will never sell them out. No need to worry at all.

19.What are the most interesting bands, in your words, that have now released their albums on Season Of Mist? Any new and good titles you could recommend to us?

With no doubt itfs DEFILED! And now Ifm looking forward to new MAYHEM album. I canft wait for the tour with them in this spring. It will be a great tour.

20.VADERfs first demo was one of the best ones and was sold out in the short time. There were so damn much copies elsewhere and all of them were sold out! How did you react when youfve heard this? And Ifm interested in what you think about this group now? Are they still the ones we can expect a lot to come from?

I donft have their demo or their recent releases, frankly, so canft say anything on this question sorry. Though, they are great as far as I know!! I have two or three albums of them and love all of them. We opened for their show in Tokyo about 5 years ago and it was the night they recorded their live in Japan album. They were cool guys and hope we can meet each other someday again.

21.Whatfs your personal opinion about the European scenes, bands and media? Are you fond of coming here again and play some shows? That would be awesome, I think. You deserve support whatever continent wefre talking about! So tell me what are your feelings towards the mentioned.

We are coming there to Europe this spring!! We will tour there with MAYHEM in this coming April-May. Ifll keep you informed on the tour dates or everything about the tour, so, please spread the words that DEFILED is coming!! Really canft wait to kick your ass! Hope everyone who read this interview will come to see the shows!

22.Well, thanks a lot Hideki. You helped me very much to find out something more about your music and yourselves in general. I think we should leave it here. If you want something to add to close this interview, be free to do it. The best of luck I wish you.

Thank you too for the interview. Please enjoy gDivinationh and get ready for the tour! Check out our web site for the updates. Stay true to Metal! Support the Death Metal Underground!!
