| 2011 June 25 Moholy-Nagy in Motion Concert: Zeitspiel für MN @The Museum of Modern Art, Hayama Kanagawa Prefecture 15:00~16:00 Christophe Charles: computer & 4-channel sound system "Light-Space Modulator" Room Moholy-Nagy's masterwork, the "Light Space Modulator", is exhibited in a dark room, in the center of this large retrospective exhibition. The kinetic sculpture is enlightened with a computer-controlled light dimmer, and will be set in movement for 2 minutes from 15:00 to 15:02 and 15:30 to 15:32. Following the premiere of Darda in 2009, the piece has been performed in Tokyo, New York, Berkeley and Los Angeles. In this new version Stone has adapted the work for the amazing 18 channel sound system of Super Deluxe and will feature Ms Sakurai's live vocals along with contributions from cellist Hiromichi Sakamoto and bassist Pearl Alexander. Morgan Fisher's light paintings will be projected into the multi-channel space as well. Stone thinks of this new version as a digital prayer for the victims of the Great Earthquake of Japan 2011, and proceeds from the concert will go to benefit those victims and their families. In the first half of the concert composer Christophe Charles also joins Carl Stone for a laptop duet, a first time collaboration between two pioneers of computer music. The piece will be an hommage to Rolf Julius who passed away on January 21, 2011. Having studied with improviser/ visionary Evan Parker and composer/ improviser Richard Barrett in the mid 90's he has performed throughout Europe, US, Asia and Australia and collaborated with among others Liza Lim, KK Null, Lucy Orta, Tetuzi Akiyama, Paul Grabowsky, Bobby Previte, John Butcher, Malaysian composer Saidah Rastam and Japanese sculpture Katsushige Nakahashi. His current projects include his free jazz unit the Tim O'Dwyer Trio and his acclaimed improvised solo performances. Tim has been a member of Australia's leading contemporary music group Elision Ensemble since 1994 composing new works for the group from fully notated scores to large scale installation/ improvised works. Tim has premiered many new works for the saxophone while performing with Elision in the context of site specific installation, opera and the concert hall. He is a founding member of Melbourne's avante rock group bucketrider and has composed and directed in collaboration with the group countless festival and pub shows, celebrated tributes to Sun Ra and John Coltrane, collaborations with Melbourne's Dance Works and Libra Contemporary Ensemble and released 4 c.d.'s on Dr Jim's Records. Wochenende | 9:26 limited edition: 300 unter den linden « The “Grundton” of this 30-minute composition is the recording of the concert given at SND STUDIOS SHEFFIELD (UK) in March 2009, entitled “Why is there something rather than nothing?” by Mark Fell and powered with d&b speakers by Tony Myatt (MRC, University of York). The sounds of planes have been recorded in Mallorca (Spain) in 1987, and in Pilat (France) in 2009. This music comes after HCDC, composed in November 2008 after the death of Daniel Charles – his last days were darkened by breathing difficulties, hence the overall presence of the “wind”. The last five minutes were composed in 1987 with telephone bells, a silo and a Spanish garbage truck, under the name “unter den linden”. The piece is not related with Berlin, but with Jules Massenet’s “Sous les tilleuls” (from “Scenes alsaciennes” where bells are heard in a distance and thus modified by the wind), and evokes a peaceful atmosphere just before the bombs begin to fall. » Christophe Charles, September 2009 « This world of ours is one relative world. Any number of other possible or actual worlds are conceivable. Each such world is able to reflect all the others without ceasing to be the real world that it is of itself. » Nishitani Keiji und transit « The conceptual framework of “und transit” was conceived while taking part in a 3 months artist residency in Krems, Austria (2008/09). While in transit (daily walks) to my studio, I was inspired by a particular passageway in Minoritenplatz. Like most passageways, which are a means to an end – and are rarely treated as an end in itself – I was immediately struck by the loneliness and practicality of this space as well as the capacity of the users to ignore it on a daily basis. During the course of my residency I collected a number of field recordings in and around Krems, in order to create a series of soundscapes based on Minoritenplatz’s sound of emptiness through the means of a quadraphonic installation. So how will the opposing issues of this return of the real relate to the desire for fiction ? What does this relationship between reality/fiction say about our relationship to the world, that which we experience, that which we want to see happen? Although, in the fields of politics and the media, we may observe a determination to clearly separate reality from fiction, born of a concern to produce credibility, even credulity, and we also (yet fordifferent reasons) observe distinctions of this kind in the field of art, we can also find mixes, combinations, the interlacing of realities and fictions which could bear witness to the state of our perceptions, desires,and even our confusion...The aimed practices of Double Vision (video, photo and new media) are crossed either by wishes to restitute real (some real) than by “fictional desires”. The rapport of reality/fiction constitutes then the problematic common purpose from which, in multiple way will be elaborated in the exhibition, with connected arborescence propositions.The exhibition Double Vision at the lieu unique is the second phase of the collaboration between the eponym research team from ESBANM and the japanese universities Musashino Art University (MAU, Tokyo) and Tokyo University of the Arts (TUA / Geidai in Yokohama). The first phase took place from January 22st until February 28th in Tokyo, at the Tokyo Wondersite and at Superdeluxe, where the 22 students and artists, researchers and professors have participated in the organization of exhibitions, meetings, lectures, events in the context of an intensive “Work in Progress”. The Nantes research program’s objective is to constitute a platform of reflection concerning occurances between the relationship of reality and fiction in contemporary art, more specifically in still and moving images, in their most contemporary aspects (works of art and theoretical writings). Thus the program aims to observe the specific practices of the artists and filmmakers working in this domain. The french japanese exchange program’s objectives is a create artistic and theoretical collaboration between japanese and french students and artists in order to inspire intercultural reflections and productions.The visual products formulated will then be integrated into collective reflection context of the research program. | 2010, March 12 BEYOND SIGNAL : CHRISTOPHE CHARLES CONFERENCE 6pm at APO33 (17 rue Paul Bellamy Nantes/FR) Christophe Charles (born Marseille 1964), works with found sounds, and makes compositions using computer programs, insisting on the autonomy of each sound and the absence of hierarchical structure. Graduated from Tsukuba University (Phd., 1996) and Paris INALCO (Phd., 1997). Currently Associate Professor at Musashino Art University (Tokyo), has released music on the German label Mille Plateaux / Ritornell ("undirected" series), and on several compilations (Mille Plateaux, Ritornell, Subrosa, Code, Cirque, Cross, X-tract, CCI, ICC, etc). He will present his approaches of sound, music, composition and his current projects. APO33 , as an interdisciplinary laboratory drawing on the artistic and technological fields, fosters various collective projects associating research, experimentation and social intervention. | 2010, February 21 Musapachi Master Course Exhibition Tokyo Metropolitan Museum 武蔵野美術大学80周年記念 大学院修了展'09 －ムサパチ－ 開催日程：2010年02月21日（日）～2010年02月26日（金） 9:00-17:00 （26日は14:00まで。入場は終了30分前まで。） 開催場所：東京都美術館（上野公園内） 武蔵野美術大学80周年記念事業の一環として、大学院修士課程の日本画・油絵・版画・彫刻・映像・写真の各コースの修了制作を中心とした作品発表で、出品 学生が主体的に企画運営をする展覧会です。 過敏な時空間 A Hypersensitive Time-Space 天野祐子（写真） イ・ヨンムク（日本画） 尾竹隆一郎（油絵） シン・ジェファ（日本画） 高石晃（油絵） 早川祐太（彫刻） 樋口晃亮（写真） クリストフ・シャルル（映像・音響） 「想像は感性の媒体である。想像に馳せられ、我々は生命に隣接する。生命そのものは、絶対的な芸術である。」（イヴ・クライン、チェルシーホテルにて、 ニューヨーク、1961年） 凡そ800立方メートルもある東京都美術館の展示空間の中で、8人が一つの環境を創造します。その環境作りの前提として、複数の時間と空間を同時に体験で きる、ということがあります。そこにあるすべてのものは、自分の時間と空間を持っており、それらの時間も空間をも尊重したいと考えています。言い換えれ ば、人間、作品、建築物なども含めて、すべての生き物や物体は常に中心にあるということです。中心は唯一無二、つまりひとつのものではなく、そこにあるす べてのものが中心にあり、中心である、という考え方です。また、それらの物体は常に互いに、そして周囲の環境と関わり合い、響き合っています。 非物質の芸術を提案したイヴ・クラインは、「Exposition du Vide」（「空虚」展）を1958年に発表しました。その作品はロバート・ラウシェンバーグの「White Paintings」やジョン・ケージの「4’33”」の延長にあると考えています。それは空気の鏡のようなもので、非物質、または空虚を可視にする （make emptiness visible）装置です。からっぽであるからこそ、光、音、空気、物体などの粒子を受け入れている「hypersensitive」（過敏）な空間で す。言い換えれば空間は純粋体験の可能性（possibility of pure experience）を提供しています。実は「もの」を感覚するための空間でありながら、それらの「もの」の感じ方（見方・聞き方）や自分の考え方を変 える装置として機能しています。これらのことを踏まえて、イヴ・クラインのチェルシーホテルの宣言にある「感性」、「想像」、「生命」、そして「絶対的な 芸術」の意味を再考してみたいと思います。 |
