concept I have studied Media Art and Sound Art with Christophe CHARLES, and musicology with jazz musician Naruyoshi KIKUCHI. I'm interested in experimenting and creating innovative works with sound and images. With John CAGE, we have learned to listen to every sound as "music". My generation sees no more hierarchy between music and noise: I think that we compose music from an infinite sound material in an alternative way, while technology provides us an innovative dimension of "listening". I will thus continue thinking about alternative meaning of composing and listening, using new technology while keeping great esteem in traditional music. On another hand, I keep thinking about how we create new visions of sound art, and how the audience can perceive them. Through thinking about various elements in music, especially rhythms with a complicated structure, I thought I want to manage to present sounds or a structural side of music in a visual dimension. That is, I want sounds to take root in an image space and to be visible as a sound construction. It is thus necessary to shift from the point of "composing" to the way of adopting systems in converting sounds to images, and to think how spectators can be concerned in that construction. Also I want to know what/how people of my generation are thinking, in other countries and other cultures. In Japan, though there are many interesting movements, most of them seems very tiny. At the same time, I often feel that the situation is somehow "conservative". This art camp seems to me a wonderful opportunity to develop such collaborative works in a truly international situation, according to my concept stated above. I am thus willing to join the ASIA-EUROPE ART CAMP 2006 and communicate with students of other cultures. Yuichi NAGAO ’·”ö —IŽs nagaoyuichi82@yahoo.co.jp acalanatha-3-zen_kh4n@docomo.ne.jp |

Graduation Work
2006![]() ![]() ![]() (click to enlarge) Sinewave sounds from speakers. A projection from the ceiling to the floor draws a square corresponding the parameter of the sinewave. The changing wave of frequency affects the drawn square, fractals are drawn in succession on the floor. A square iron board (30cm~30cm) is set on the center of the projected image. The audience hit the board with the hammer: the parameters of the sinewave and drawn square change. The audience can thus directly approach the sounds and images. equipment: projector macintosh mic ironboard hammer amp mixer speaker ![]() (click to enlarge) |
