| Michiyo Sato, inspired by mythologies, makes
dance blending Modern and Japanese Dances, seeking for archetypal
body languages. She is especially interested in the
revival of dance theaters of the ancient Japanese and Greeks
in which dance, drama and music were integrated into one.
She makes dance that shares the experiences of women, especially
Asian women who have recently undergone great social changes.
Graduating Tsuda College, on scholarship
from the Rotary Foundation Ms. Sato studied modern dance
and choreography at NYU Master of Dance Education program,
as well as with Dr. Jeanne Bresciani's Isadora Duncan International
Institute (IDII), Erick Hawkins/Lucia Dlugoszewski, Mary
Anthony, Martha Myers, and Sachiyo Ito (Japanese traditional.)
She received a Master of Dance Education degree from NYU
along with the Dr. Patricia Rowe Award for
gOutstanding Commitment to Dance
Education.h
Subsequently she
toured around the U.S., England and Japan with her choreography. New
York Times described that she ghas a sophisticated way with
style and content.h In 2004 she had full evening concerts
titled, gSILK AND UME BLOSSOMING: To Women of Japanh with
full audience at Joyce SoHo in New York.
As a dancer in
1994 she served as Dance Assistant in Carman Moorefs gMass
for the 21st Centuryh at the Lincoln Center. In 1998
she danced the Angel role in the musical gThe
King and I.h As Ambassador to Japan of Isadora Duncan
International Institute, in 2001 she held a performance
and workshops titled
gHomage to Isadora Duncan from East and Westh at the British
Museum with Dr. Bresciani, and has performed Isadora Duncan's
choreography at St. Lawrence Center for the Arts in Canada,
Parthenon Tama in Tokyo, the Delphic Game in Greece, among
other venues.
She has taught
at Tsuda College, National Educational Workshop Forum, Gakushuin
Womenfs College in Japan as well as in the US at New York
University Sports Center, United Nations Friendship Club,
and in England at London Institute, among others.
Currently she is writing gIsadora
Duncan's Dance Education and Spiritualityh and nominated
for the Fresh Face Award by the Japanese Dance Critique
Association in 2003 and 2004.
